How I Set Expectations and Measure Success for My Clients

As a consultant, I believe I have an obligation to my clients to set expectations and measure my own progress often.

My role isn't about simply showing up with a bunch of templates, it's about making a positive difference, solving problems and demonstrating value. If I can't do that, then what's the point?

In my work, usually this involves hitting financial targets, but there can be other metrics as well.

So before beginning work with any new client, I want to know answers to questions like:

✅ How do you suggest we measure the success of our work together?

✅ What is your overall goal when it comes to our work together?

✅ What are your expectations for the next 30, 60, 90 days?

✅ How do we know we have succeeded?

Then I document it, create a dashboard to track it, and have regular meetings to hold myself accountable.

Because at the end of the day, what matters is actually making improvements in the business. And I take that seriously.

❓ What are your favorite expectation-setting questions? I bet you all have some good ones!
