Fear of the risk
The thing that holds back most aspiring freelance project managers from launching their own business is fear of the risk.
(My humble observation after speaking with hundreds of project managers over the past year about freelancing and building consulting businesses.)
In defense of project managers everywhere, we ARE trained to be aware of risks. And for many project managers, it's second nature to identify them all. 😅
But being risk aware isn't the same as being risk averse.
And a lot of what is disguised as risk aversion is straight up fear.
Such as what one person recently said to me:
"But what if all of my client files are destroyed and I get sued and then I lose my home because I can't pay my bills...?" 🤔
Sure, all of this could happen. You could even calculate the probability, make a risk matrix and really nerd out about it all.
It could also not happen, the opposite could happen, or some other fabulously unexpected outcome could happen.
(Also, business liability insurance is a thing)
Look, I'm not suggesting that these things aren't worth considering (I have entire videos and sections of my Freelance Guide devoted to how to make informed decisions about freelancing).
But here's the deal:
Either you want to do this or you don't. Either you're ready or you're not.
If we are being honest, you already know the answer.
And if you really want to do this and are looking for help moving forward, I've got you.
