They told me it was too risky to build a business as a single mom.

They told me I should get a full time job with health benefits and a 401K because that was the only way to financial security.

But I didn't listen.

That's because I had already been through the job searches, long commutes, missed time with my kiddo and layoffs. And after all that, taking matters into my own hands seemed a lot less risky than putting my trust in some company.

And it's true, building my own thing helps me design a life that works for this phase of my life that is full of dance practices, piano lessons, and birthday parties. I often wonder how I would be able to pull this off as a full time employee - I don't think I could.

Is it hard? Absolutely. But isn't anything worth having at least a little challenging?

Some of you may wonder how this is possible. And you're not alone. I wasn't sure about it either in the beginning.

But now that I have several years behind me, I can say with confidence there are several key decisions which made this all possible.

I'll share some with you here:

➡️ Downsize and live small. Stuff doesn't matter as much as freedom.

➡️ Build a solid savings cushion and continue to religiously spend less than you make.

➡️ Incorporate multiple revenue streams into your financial strategy. It takes time but it's worth it.

➡️ Don't be afraid to live alternatively, do things differently, or generally raise eyebrows. It's your life, do what works for you.

➡️ Be discerning about who you spend your time with, what you put into your brain, and how you treat your body. Physical and mental health is everything (and I'm so grateful for mine).

❓ If you're doing your own thing, what advice do you have for how to do this sustainably?
