Who cares if it isn't what everyone else is doing

"You can't be a consultant as a single mom! What will you do with your kid when you have to travel?"

Said basically everyone when I told them of my business growth plans.

"I'll figure it out." I responded. "Or maybe I'll bring her with me!"

The last comment led to gasps and lots of "explaining" to me why that wouldn't be possible.

Trust me, I'm well aware of the concerns around bringing a kid to work and how it could possibly lead to a perception issue regarding my abilities or level of "professionalism."

But I also don't care, respectfully.

That's because I know my child, I know myself, and I know my clients. I wouldn't do it if it didn't make sense for everyone involved.

In fact, when necessary I have brought my daughter with me to numerous work functions and we have been received with nothing but positive regard and always hired to come back.

Some people say I'm lucky to work with clients who are so accommodating. I agree that I'm fortunate.

But also, maybe, I'm a little strategic about who I choose to work with in the first place. 💡

And perhaps that's why working with the big corporate clients who often wouldn't even entertain such a request, isn't the right approach for everyone.

I'll take the flexibility, relationships, and ability to say yes to meaningful work that requires travel even if that means I'm sacrificing a few extra bucks in my rate by working with smaller clients.

Figure out what's really important to you and develop your strategy around that.

Who cares if it isn't what everyone else is doing or what all the gurus tell you to do.
