Set your direction and take action

I’m not the same "freelancer" now as I was four years ago.

People always say “I want to do what you do!” but the part they miss is this isn’t where I started.

It’s true my role now is that of a fractional leader and strategic advisor.

But that hasn't always been the case.

I spent years managing projects and building relationships before I was hired to develop strategy and participate at an executive level.

And if you’re launching your own business, it probably won’t be where you start either (unless you have some sort of connection or opportunity right off the bat).

This is why I encourage aspiring freelancers to simply get started, and remember:

➡️ Your first few clients may not be ideal, but they will help you learn and discover ways to build a better service for those who are.

➡️ Your first few projects may not be your dream contracts, but they will give you experience and perspective to leverage in future work.

➡️ Your first few years may not be any easier than working as an employee, but they will help you become stronger and lay the foundation for fruitful years ahead.

So stop getting overly wrapped up in things like titles, dream projects, perfect business plans, and visions of fat retainer rates.

Instead, set your direction, create a flexible plan and, most importantly, take action.

It takes time and consistency to get to where you want to be. That's the advice everyone gives because it's true. 😉
