3 Questions to Discover if Freelancing is Right for You

When you are a freelancer, you work for yourself.

I’ll repeat: When you are a freelancer, you are a self employed person.

So this means you are responsible for finding your own work. Repeatedly.

And if you aren’t interested in this very important aspect of running a business, then you might want to reconsider freelancing as a career (I’m just being real with you here 😊 ).

You see, so often I hear from folks who say they want to become freelancers because they are having trouble finding work, or because their current workplace isn’t flexible enough, or because it’s some sort of last resort.

And I understand that, but unless you have the passion, grit, and determination to BUILD, then it might not be the best fit for you (at least not long term). 💪

There’s not a place you go to push a button and instantly get a freelance job. Sure, there are platforms where you can potentially land one-off jobs, but again, it’s work to secure those contracts, and many platforms end up being a poor ROI (more on that in future posts).

>>TL/DR: The opportunities are out there, but you have to be willing to put in the effort to find them. <<

Through consistently networking and putting yourself out there you can build a solid pipeline so that you aren’t always desperately looking for work. You can negotiate appropriate day rates or, if you are a consultant, you can build a retainer model to make your income more predictable and steady.

But again, it’s work. And usually a different type of work than the typical project manager does at a 9-5.

➡ So if you’re considering freelancing as a project manager, here are three questions to help you determine if this might be the right fit for you:

⭐ Do you have a solid network who you are comfortable reaching out to about your freelance work?

⭐ Are you financially and emotionally prepared to enter into a career where your income will be unpredictable?

⭐ Do you have a true passion not only for your area of expertise, but also for business building in general?

Answering yes to these questions means freelancing might be a good fit for you. 💫
